Tartous/AMRIT

Along the Syrian coast are scattered hundreds of archeological sites stretching from the western plains to the eastern costal Mountain range.

Man dwelled here thousand of years ago and established many towns, cities and kingdoms whose ruins are still found in place to tell us along tale about the history of Syria.

Amrit is one of the most important costal cities. It lies seven kilometers to the south east of Tartous almost reaching the sea, at one point, as it is only 700 meters away. Archeological items found there belong to the first millennium BC.

When it was established by the dwellers of the island of Arwad, the Phoenicians, on a site across from the island. One of the most important landmarks in Amrit is the temple, a large basin carved in the rock 56 m. long 49m. wide and 3 m. deep surrounded by hall ways supported by stone pillars. In the middle of the temple lies the central after dedicated for the god "Mel kart", god of "curing illnesses". To the north east of the temple, 300m. away, stands the Olympic stadium . It is also carved in the rock. It's 220m. long and 30m. wide .

it used to seat eleven thousand people . In addition to the temple and the stadium ,there are the Surphaguses Which has a cone shape designed for the burial of the royal family and the elite of Arwad and Amrit . this tombs are considered rare archeological landmarks along the Syrian coast .
